The “Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft zur Förderung der angewandten Forschung e.V.” is Europe’s largest application-oriented research organization. Its research activities are conducted by 66 institutes at locations throughout Germany with about 24,000 employees. Future-oriented strategic research commissioned by the government and public authorities is carried out with the aim of promoting innovations in key technologies of economic and social relevance over the next five to ten years.

Working within the framework of the European Union's research and technological development programs, Fraunhofer is involved in industrial consortia on technical issues ultimately destined to improve the competitiveness of European industry. In the HELIS project, two Fraunhofer institutes are involved: Fraunhofer ISIT and Fraunhofer UMSICHT.

Fraunhofer ISIT

The Fraunhofer Institute for Silicon Technology (ISIT) has over 14 years of experience in the development of lithium-polymer cells. A complete process chain is available, starting with the slurry preparation to the tape casting process and the assembly and packaging of complete cells in customised designs. Experimental methods for preparing and characterising electrodes as well as high-performance lithium accumulators shall be at ISIT’s disposal for this project.

Fraunhofer UMSICHT
The Fraunhofer Institute for Environmental, Safety and Energy Technology UMSICHT actively shapes the energy turnaround and the raw material shift. As a pioneer for technical innovations in the fields of energy, processes and products, Fraunhofer UMSICHT aims at advancing sustainable economies, environmentally friendly technologies and innovative approaches. The institute’s wish is to improve the standard of living and to promote the innovation capacity of the national economy. The customers are industrial enterprises, service companies and public authorities. Together with them Fraunhofer UMSICHT develops and researches the latest know-how and transfers it into industrial applications and marketable products.

As one of the 66 institutes of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, Fraunhofer UMSICHT is part of a world-wide network and promotes international cooperation.

Fraunhofer UMSICHT, conducting mesoporous-carbon-preparation scale-up and production in the HELIS project, has over 15 years of experience in R&D to produce and re-activate high-quality activated carbons. Moreover, adjusting the pore spectrum towards the extreme properties of carbon molecular sieves and even developing composite-adsorbents with enhanced heat conductivity is part of the expertise. Special applications of activated carbon are covered by the group too, especially the use as catalyst for Gas-phase heterogeneous Catalytic Cracking (GCC). Bench-scale and pilot-scale gear covers the complete production chain especially of formed activated carbon and is supplemented by various characterization methods that range up to different magnetic-coupled suspension balances to investigate the adsorption of different gases and gas mixtures.
